AC circuits are electrical circuits that use alternating current (AC) as their power source. Unlike direct current (DC) circuits, which have a constant flow of current in one direction, AC circuits have a current that periodically changes direction.
Typically, they consist from a power source, such as a generator or an outlet, and various components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors. Parallel or in series, these components are connected. Thus, creating different types of circuits.
With this circuit, the current changes direction at a specific frequency, usually measured in hertz (Hz). The voltage also changes direction and magnitude over time. The most common type of AC circuit is a sinusoidal wave, where the voltage and current vary in a smooth, periodic wave pattern.
Additionally, they have several advantages over DC circuits. They transmit over long distances without significant loss of power. Furthermore, they are transformed to different voltage levels. Using transformers makes this possible. They are also more efficient for certain types of devices, such as motors and transformers.
Everyday applications require the use of AC circuits. This includes household electronics, power distribution systems, and industrial machinery. Understanding how these work is essential for electrical engineers and technicians working in power systems and electronics.
These circuits are a crucial part of your electrical system. Hire only licensed electricians to work on them. This is key to safety and proper function.
